Mount Koya is one of Japan’s most sacred sites and the headquarters of Shingon Buddhism. The temple town has a history of over 1200 years and even today it’s a very active monastic center. 52 of the over 117 temples offer accommodation and an overnight staying is definitely an experience of a lifetime. It’s a chance to see the workings of Shingon monastic life, and take part in some of the activities such as meditation or sutra copying.
