Famous for its bamboo grove and dozens of remarkable temples and gardens, Arashiyama has been a popular destination since the Heian Period (794-1185). Located in the west of Kyoto, can be easily reached in 30-60 minutes by bus, train or bicycle. The main street starting from Togetsukyo bridge is very touristic and it’s lined up with dozens of shops and restaurants. But just a short walk north of the town centre the atmosphere becomes more peaceful with several hillside temples and gardens well worth a visit. Arashiyama is also the starting point of the Sagano Scenic Railway that follows the Hozugawa gorge to the town of Kameoka.
